Cedar Dala
Cedar Dala
Dala horses come from Sweden and have a rich folk craft history. During the frigid winter of 1716 during the Great Northern War, many soldiers were housed in private residences. One soldier began to carve little horses out of scrap firewood he found. He painted one bright red and gave it to the homeowner who had kept him warm. As he moved through the villages he continued to trade his craft for a bowl of soup. When other soldiers learned of the Dala barter they took up a knife and did the same. No two Dala horses are ever exactly alike.
Big cedar Dala made from scrap construction cedar. Stripey and sturdy and most content to rest on a stack of books or records. Sanded to a satin finish. The lovely cream and red tendencies of cedar and small ink-like grain lines make these Dala horses something special. These cedar pieces are carved by hand and made to order. Your Dala will gallop your way in 1-2 weeks.
This listing is for one Dala. Your Dala may vary slightly in grain and color due to the handmade nature of these special horses and the unique characteristics of the wood being used.
Finished in VH’s own all-natural blend of mineral oil and beeswax. Nothing quite like the smell of cedar and beeswax. 🕯️
Measures roughly 3.5” x 4” x 1.5”
