Choosing a frame

1) Measure your artwork. Our frames are listed by the size of what artwork they are built to display. In other words, a 5”x7” print will fit in a 5”x7” frame. Once the piece is behind the glass in the frame, you should expect to lose roughly 1/4” of visibility around each side. How you mount the piece (matting, no matting, etc.) will also affect how the work appears in the frame and what size of frame you need to accomodate the piece.

2) Decide on how you will mount your artwork in your frame. The three most common mounting categories are:

a) flush mount

b) float mount

c) matted

FLUSH MOUNT:

Flush mounted artwork takes up the entire frame space. In other words, there is no matting around the piece or under the piece. You can count on losing about 1/4” on all sides of the artwork once it is in the frame.

FLOAT MOUNT:

Float mounted artwork is adhered to the top of a mat board. We recommend using a linen hinging tape to mount your artwork to the mat board.

MATTED:

Matted artwork is adhered to the underside of a pre-cut mat board.

3) Decide if you want to add the optional spacer to your frame. We recommend upgrading your frame to include spacers if you are planning to flush mount your piece. In a flush mounted piece of artwork, the artwork meets the frame and glass at all corners and edges. This means that there is limited airflow, and the piece can be susceptible to mildew and damage over time.

4) Once you have your dimensions, mounting type, and options decided, browse our made-to-order frame selection.
